Cistercian College announces Colm Maloney as new President

Cistercian College Roscrea has announced the appointment of Mr Colm Maloney to be President of the College with effect from August 1st 2023.

Mr Maloney is currently Head of Boarding at Kilkenny College, a post he has held since 2019. (Kilkenny College is a mixed school with a roll of 970 pupils of whom 470 are boarders) . He is chair of the Association of Boarding Schools Ireland (ABSI) and was previously a teacher and housemaster at Clongowes Wood College. Previously he had a successful career in industry.

He has served on the finance committees both at Clongowes and Kilkenny. He is a member of the Leinster Schools Rugby Committee.

Originally from Kilcullen, Co Kildare, Mr Maloney was educated at Clongowes Wood College and at St Mary’s College, Strawberry Hill, London whence he graduated in history and management (hons).

Announcing Mr Maloney’s appointment, the chairperson of the CCR Board of Management, Mr Kevin Keegan, said: “We are delighted that Colm Maloney is coming to lead the college. He brings with him an excellent reputation and a breadth and depth of experience in education leadership, particularly in relation to boarding schools, where the highest standards of teaching, care and safeguarding have to apply at all times.”

Mr Maloney’s appointment followed an exhaustive search and competitive interview process. He succeeds Gavin Clark who has been appointed as Principal of Westbourne College, Singapore.

Kevin Keegan added: “Colm Maloney joins CCR at an exciting juncture in our history. Enrolments are strong, from day boarding to 5- and 7-day boarding. The college’s range of academic options, sporting facilities and extra-curricular activities continues to expand and develop.”

Colm Maloney said: “Along with my wife, Helen, my son Colm and my daughters Moya, Bridget and Aoife, I am really delighted to be joining Cistercian College Roscrea, a place with a rich tradition. I am honoured to be appointed as its president.

I know that I will be joining and leading a great team that continues to grow the college, cementing its place as one of Ireland’s premier schools. I am looking forward to bringing to CCR my many wide experiences in education, boarding and the commercial world.

I will be a custodian of the deep Cistercian tradition which has served so many past-pupils, families and friends for almost 120 years. I look forward to building relationships and working closely with the Principal Gerry Grealish, teachers, housemasters  and all staff, current students, parents, past-pupils, the community and the Board of Management over the coming months and years as we embark on a new chapter of Cistercian College’s history,  growing the College for generations to come.”

Cistercian College Roscrea was founded by the Cistercian monks of the Strict Observance (OCSO) at Mount Saint Joseph Abbey in 1905 and is located on the Abbey’s 600-acre campus on the Tipperary-Offaly border. It is now administered by a Board of Management under the patronage of the Abbot and Community of Mount Saint Joseph. It has a current enrolment of 250 boys.
