At Cistercian College Sport plays an important role in the lives of many of our student’s here with students having the ability and opportunity to play a range of sports enabling them to both advance and excel in their chosen sport.

Cistercian College has an exceptional offering and performance record in terms of delivering team and individual sporting success across a wide range of sports.

The College has invested heavily in it’s Sports programme and facilities during the pandemic period, now boasting an offering that is at the cutting-edge of the Irish secondary school sector.

Our ambition is to provide an environment where our pupils can expect and “believe in more”. We build on the rich sporting tradition of the College by delivering a modernised,  high performance sports programme that focuses on health, wellbeing and lifelong participation for all. The College’s values of Character, Community and Respect, plus Commitment and Self-Development underpin all interactions in the College sports department.

Strategically, our overriding objectives are twofold…to target both high participation and high performance, whilst staying true to the College’s mission of being ‘A Place To Grow’.

The College Sports Department headed up by our Director of Sport Mr. Brendan McKeogh delivers this market leading programme across the full-6 year boarding cycle. Headed up by our Head of Athletic Development Ms. Annie McCarra, it aims to ensure that every student attending the College receives a balance, individualised physical development focus that we believe will not only underpin long-term success across the team and individual sports that the College supports, but will also deliver clear lifelong wellbeing and physical resilience benefits for all College Students, as part of our ‘Sport for Life’ holistic approach.

Hurling
Our hurling programme is based around consistent training twice a week from September to May. We have a “Hurling First” group who have specific S&C development programmes along with additional coaching work. We play in the Leinster GAA competitions, as well as Offaly and Tipperary Secondary schools. Our coaches are a combination of internal staff and external coaches. We have 2 hurling fields and a floodlight 4G hurling alley.
Basketball
Basketball In Cistercian College play in the Leinster ‘B’ levels and are current Midlands Junior B Champions. Coaching takes place 2 evenings a week. We field teams at 1st year, 2nd year, Junior and Senior. We are launching an exciting partnership with Hoops for Life which will give our players access to National standard coaching.
Soccer
Soccer is a growing sport at Cistercian College with our boys having the opportunity to represent the College at U14, U15, U17 and U19 levels in both friendly games and competitions. The squad train 3 evenings a week and compete in U15/U17 and U19 competitions.
Athletics
Cistercian College has a proud tradition in Athletics as one of the top 3 most successful Athletics Schools in Ireland. Students have the weekly opportunity to work with our Middle Distance/Cross Country coach, Throwing Coach or Track Coach
Equestrian
The Cistercian College Equestrian team compete in the Leinster Schools competitions.Our Chef D’Equipe brings the Equestrian team to Mahers Equestrian Centre once a week.
