The Walled Garden TY Project

This year the College sought permission from the Monastery to restore the Walled Garden to its former glory as a TY project. Over many years the walled garden had gone wild and become overgrown. The project is a collaborative one which is fully supported by the Monks under the supervision of Dom Malachy and with hands on support provided by Fr. Aodhán. Our first step is to try and clear the space of many years of wild growth.

The objective for the year is;

  • To clear space and plant in spring
  • To develop and build an outdoor classroom/wellbeing/spiritual space
  • To clear stables and begin restoration

Ultimately the plan is to fully restore the garden as an amenity for the Monastic community, the College and the local community.

Due to COVID it became apparent that TY students were having difficulty securing work experience and a parent asked if we could organise that they could work on the garden project for the week. A plan was put in place and Fr Aodhán and Mr Smyth agreed to oversee the project. Parents and friends of the Monastery came on board with generous sponsorship.

In addition TY students are timetabled to go out to the garden for an hour each week.
